Globe Amaranth
Gomphrena globosa

Description: “The Globe Amaranth whose flowers resemble heads of clover of deepened hue, exists in several varieties of white, purple, speckled with gold, and variegated.  From the flowers of this species remaining unchanged, even the dead and dry they have made the emblem of constancy.”  Hermon Bourne, The Florist’s Manual, Boston 1833.

Cultivation: Tender annual.  Easily grown, although the seed is often difficult to germinate.  Nineteenth-century advice recommends soaking the seed in milk 12 hours or scalding.  For early bloom, start indoors or in a hot bed in March or April and transplant to the garden after frost.  Set transplants 1 foot apart, in full sun, on well-drained soil.  Tolerates heat and drought.  The flowers are excellent for dried arrangements; cut at, or just before peak bloom and hang to dry on their own stems out of direct sun.
