Old Sturbridge Village Handmade Redware Pottery Beanpot Small

Made by the talented potters at Old Sturbridge Village using techniques and designs from our historic collection. The perfect way to cook up some delicious beans just like the colonists or use as a sugar bowl to accent your next tea party.  Skilled craftspeople create each piece of redware pottery at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts.

Annual Wood Firing in our Historic Kiln:  Once a year, our potters fire up our historic wood fired kiln to create LIMITED EDITION pieces.  This pottery item has been created by hand but is then placed in the wood fed kiln for the final step creating a deeper, richer color with variations to the glaze.  Located outside the Old Sturbridge Village potters shed, the large, reproduction brick “updraft bottle” kiln is used once a year for firing pots.   Visit OSV.org to see details on our kiln.

History/Use of Beanpots: The thick walls and wide body made beanpots perfect for slow cooking, while the narrow top prevented evaporation and heat loss. The handles were placed high on the vessel, and there was a lid to seal in the heat. Many of them had a ventilation hole as well. Bean pots functioned the same way as the modern-day crockpot, except they were placed in an oven, on the stove, or hung over a fire.
