History of Joe Frogger cookies:
Joseph Brown was an African-American resident of Marblehead, MA who fought on the side of the patriots in the American Revolution. For years, he ran a popular tavern in the town but some would say is wife was the real star. His wife, Lucretia Brown, is credited with inventing these molasses cookies that grew to be part of New England lore and named it after her husband, Joe.

The cookies were originally made with rum so preserved fairly well.  It was said that because of this fact, sailors were able to take them with them and keep them for a couple of months when at sea."

Both Joseph and Lucretia were born into slavery and later freed.
